Started by a couple of passionate riders almost 30 years ago, the Maz-Siavonga 400 has become a well known annual event in motor-sports circles, at one stage even being one of Zambia's simultaneously most loved and feared national races.
Today the Maz-Siavonga 400 is a family oriented fun enduro that takes place over the Zambian Hero’s and Unity long weekend; men, women and children from all over Sub-Saharan Africa, daring to face the challenge of some of Zambia's most beautiful and most difficult terrain together, with the help of a prevailing sense of comradeship and whatever bikes and quads get them through the bush. The ride takes us past many forgotten little villages dotted throughout the picturesque Southern province of Zambia and raises money to assist with their community projects. This year our main objective is to raise enough funds to bring electricity to Mutinangala Clinic, so that they may store medical supplies.
The route starts while the sun is rising in the Munali Hills, near Mazabuka and traverses past the Ibwe Munyama Falls and the Lusitu River to Siavonga, all the while, through single track, jeep dirt track and sandy-river terrain, with varying technicality at different points and fuel and rehydration stops along the way.
After a full day of riding bikes in the bush, the riders end up at Eagles Rest, A beautiful and quaint backpackers resort, located on a beach in the sleepy lake-side town of Siavonga also dubbed as "Zambia’s Riviera”. Once the riders are signed in, everyone settles down and ends the day with some great food, new friends, beers and beach bonfires.
The following day brings with it some fun activities for the kids: jumping castles, paint balling, a kids bike track and paddle boating, while the advanced riders have the option of going on an outride. The late afternoon brings with it the end of our day on a sponsored sunset cruise on Lake Kariba.
This year, for the first time we are doing the “home ride” to Lilayi, the route takes us alongside the mighty Zambezi River and over the Kafue, through some rarely visited places ending at Lilayi Lodge.
The Maz Siavonga 400 is a fun ride, organised and sponsored by people with a pure love of riding and adventure- it is not an official event under the ZMSA.
We would like to thank our main sponsors this year, Samfuel, Best of Bikes, Eagles Rest, Brainstorm Design Studios and United Fisheries, as well as all our volunteers, friends, supporters and riders for making everything come together.
The ride is taking place this year over the July 2-4 weekend. For details on entry forms, and information on sponsorship, please visit our website- www.siavonga400.com or email us at [email protected]
