Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (Montmeló).- For the third consecutive year, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is joining the environmental initiative KISS Barcelona (Keep it Shiny & Sustainable) during the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™, which this year will also coincide with the World Environment Day (WED) on Sunday, 5 June. This year, the FIM is celebrating 10 years of partnership with United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and this event will be the perfect scenario for showcasing its commitment to the practice of sustainable sports.

The circuit, committed to the environment

In 2008, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya received certification stating that the environmental management system of the race track complies with all the requirements of the ISO 14001-2004 standard for the activities of event organisation and facility leasing, becoming the only circuit worldwide to be certified according to this standard.

With this certification, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya committed itself to continuous improvement of the environmental behaviour of the company, recognising their responsibility towards the environment and setting themselves the goal of progressively and continuously reducing the negative effects on the environment and on the wellbeing of people to minimum levels.

With the aim of protecting the environment, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya works to minimise the consumption of resources and the generation of waste, promoting the use of recycled materials and renewable energy sources and minimising waste; cooperating with suppliers and contractors to improve respect and protection of the environment; promoting staff communication and education in order to foster environmental behaviour and raising the awareness of the public and all stakeholders about the need to protect environment. In this way, sports facilities such as the Circuit can continue to grow, while continuing to be considered as one of the best race tracks in the world, thanks to their modern facilities and a pioneering environmental involvement in the world of motor sports.

This certification has been renewed every year, on the basis of a review of the development of the management system and approval of new objectives.

In 2012, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya received the "2012 FIM Environment Award" from the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), an award that recognises the commitment of the Catalan racetrack and the work done in terms of environmental protection thanks to the “Green Meeting Point” project introduced to promote sustainable mobility through different actions such as environment–friendly races, conferences on the electric vehicle and its alternatives, tours, exhibitions, etc. as well as environmental awareness raising and education actions aimed at fans and organisation staff.

Within this special context, the Circuit will also be promoting best environmental practices among all motorcycle fans by means of different actions planned in the framework of KISS Barcelona during the Catalan Grand Prix, in line with the COP21 agreement, represented by a first class ambassador, the rider Marc Márquez, who is also a FIM Ride Green Ambassador.

A festival of sustainable celebrations

> KISS Barcelona Stand: an environmental education and information point for all the initiatives carried out in Catalunya with the aim of raising society’s awareness of the need for environmental protection, with the collaboration of Xarxa de Custòdia del Territori, la Xarxa de Voluntariat Ambiental de Catalunya (Nature Week) and Obrador del Tercer Sector Ambiental (“I am an environmental donor”). These initiatives are supported by the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Catalan Government. The stand will be located behind the Grandstands of the Stadium area.

> Ride Green Area: inauguration of the “Ride Green” area in the Stadium area of the Circuit, in the presence of some riders and authorities.

> KISS Barcelona Bag: Spectators coming out to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will have the chance to receive this bag, produced with organic material with the collaboration of Interlimpe Grupo Sirsa. The bag will promote reduction of the environmental impact of waste during the MotoGP™ GP, as containers for selective waste collection will be made available all over the Circuit.

> Re-usable cup: these cups will help to disseminate the message of the 3 Rs (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) with the special edition for 2016 which includes the signature of Marc Márquez. The cups can be purchased at the Aramark catering points in the spectator areas. > Food donation: on Sunday, the excess food from the weekend will be donated to the social dining house “El Xiprer” in Granollers, a shelter for people with economic problems.

> “Slow Food”: local gastronomy culture offer and Km 0 of the Tapas GP area.

> “Stop Food Waste”: awareness-raising posters with the message “Stop Food Waste” at the catering points managed by Aramark. According to the FAO, 1.3 tons of food are wasted every year.

> Environmental awareness raising at the Kids’ Zones: didactic drawing materials will be distributed at the leisure areas for kids, promoting different values such as nature, endangered species, flora and fauna, in line with the motto of the WED, “Go wild for life” (defending animals at risk of extinction).

> #KISSBarcelona Contest: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will use its social media channels to launch a contest in which participants will have to publish a positive action for the environment carried out during the Grand Prix using the hashtag #KISSBarcelona. A Paddock pass for the winner and one accompanying person including VIP access to the FIM Hospitality area will be raffled among all participants.

> Drawing contest for students: The pupils of a school in Barcelona will take part in a drawing contest on environmental topics. The prize will be a visit to the pit garage of Marc Márquez on Monday, 6 June after the MotoGP™ tests. A total of 10 budding artists will get the chance to meet the World Champion and talk about environmental issues with the KISS Barcelona ambassador.

> Dissemination of sustainable mobility: the Circuit will promote the use of sustainable means of transport to attend the Gran Premio de Catalunya de MotoGP™, i.e. public transport (train or bus) and the bicycle. For the first time, bicycle riders will have this year their own parking site in order to facilitate the access to all types of sustainable means of transport. The Catalan racetrack also recommends that all spectators travelling by motorbike or car optimise the use of spaces in their private vehicles.

The animations in the spectator areas during the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya de MotoGP™ will also promote the environmental values of KISS Barcelona.

Graffitti Artist “Kapi” , Hip Hop presentations, Kids Zone and the Brincadeira Batucada show will be among the activities reflecting themes dedicated to this year World Environment Day: Go wild for Life!
