The Benoni rider, Hein Junior van Niekerk (19), racing for Team RAD MOTO KTM, won the Allcomers Class at the recent Bronze Qualifier event for the Roof of Africa that will take place at the end of the year.
While the purpose of the Bronze Qualifier was to give competitors a chance to qualify for the 90 places available in the Bronze Class at the Roof of Africa in December, entrants in the Allcomers Class could use this event to practice in a race environment in Lesotho.
A total of 228 riders (180 entrants in the Bronze Qualifier) started the race with the ‘bronze’ riders leading the way while the ‘Allcomers’ (48 riders) tackled the route after them.
Van Niekerk was the overall winner followed by 18 year-old Taki Bogiages (Bert Smith All Stars Racing Powered by RAD KTM) with another youngster, DJ Hatting (18) on a KTM third. They all competed in the Allcomers Class.
Van Niekerk participated in his first ‘Roof’ last year, but could not finish as he missed a fuel point and ran out of fuel. Bogiages finished his first ‘Roof’ last year in the Silver Class.
At the Bronze Qualifier, both Van Niekerk and Bogiages were the only competitors to have completed the 91km route, that included tough sections like Mad Cow, Bushmans Pass and Pressure Cooker, in under four hours. They will both enter the 2014 Roof of Africa in the Silver Class.
Van Niekerk’s prize, as well as the first two finishers in the Bronze Qualifier, is a free entry for the 2014 Roof.
